Paul prayed constantly for believers and he said that he never stopped giving thanks for them. He had great love for all of the saints and desired for them to grow in the knowledge of our Savior. He wanted them to be prepared for service and to bring glory to the Lord with all that they did, so he not only taught them but he interceded on their behalf.
Ephesians 1:15-23 and Colossians 1:9-13 tells us what he prayed. Let us be faithful to pray on behalf of the saints also. When interceding on behalf of one another let us remember Paul’s example.
He prayed for:
Ø Them to have wisdom- Wisdom to see clearly and really understand who Christ is and all that he has done for them. For God to make them wise about spiritual things. (Ephesians 1:17, Colossians 1:9)
Ø That the eyes of their understanding be opened- To know..
1) What is the hope of their calling in Christ and for God to help them understand what He wants them to do.
2) That God has been made rich because we who are Christ’s have been given to him.
3) How incredibly great His power is to help those who believe in Him. It’s the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead! (Ephesians 1:18-19, Colossians 1:9)
Ø Them to live to please the Lord- That the way they lived their daily lives would always please the Lord and honor him. That they would always be doing good, kind things for others, while all the same time learning to know God better and better. (Colossians 1:10)
Ø Them to be filled with His mighty glorious strength – So that they will be able to be long suffering and patient, to keep going no matter what happens. (Colossians 1:11)
Ø To be full of joy and thankful- To always be full of the joy of the Lord and always thankful to the Father who has made us fit to share all the wonderful things that belong to those who live in the Kingdom of light. (Colossians 1:12)
We may not know others specific situations or needs but we know that we all have the same basic needs. This is an excellent guide to follow when praying for others.
Lord, thank you for giving us a blueprint that we can use when we pray on behalf of other believers. When we come into your presence interceding give us the Words to speak and remind us of the examples that you have given us in your Word. Thank you for your Holy Spirit that puts the desire on our heart to pray for others. In Jesus name..Amen.
